About Us

Tena Koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa A warm welcome to Tarawera High School

Our Journey

Our school is bordered by the Te Takanga-i-o-Apa river, which connects and flows into Te Awa-o-te Atua at Matata then out to sea. This reminds us that the learning pathway our students are on at Tarawera High School is part of a larger journey that continues through life.

A new beginning

With the wisdom of our elders, the guidance of our teachers and the energy of our rangatahi, we travel the path towards an exciting future.

Te Kaungā Whārangi Turning of a new page - new beginnings.

We are all whanau

At Tarawera High School we are one family, with shared values and a common whakapapa.

He waka eke noa A canoe which we are all in with no exception

Guided by the wisdom of our elders

The stories of our ancestors and their wise whakatauki (proverbs) inspire us to this day, with lessons as powerful now as when they were first spoken.

Kia mau koe ki nga kupu o ou tupuna Hold fast to the words of your ancestors

Protected by our Guardian taniwha

Our caring staff and supportive school whanau help guide our rangatahi along their pathway.

He hono tangata e kore e motu; ka pa he taura waka e motu
Unlike a canoe rope, a human bond cannot be severed.

We navigate our path in life

We have introduced Vocational Pathways, with stronger links to career and study options to help our students prepare for their future after school.

Mai i te Kōpae ki te Urupa, tātou ako tonu ai. From the cradle to the grave we are forever learning.
